1881 — The first US men’s national tennis championships began at the Newport Casino in Newport, RI. (More info.)

1934 — The first College Football All-Star Game, featuring a team of college all-stars against the NFL champs of the previous season, the Chicago Bears, was played to a scoreless tie at Soldier Field in Chicago. (More info.)

1935 — Vern Kennedy of the Chicago White Sox no-hit the Cleveland Indians, 5-0, at Comiskey Park. (More info.)

1959 — Sandy Koufax of the Los Angeles Dodgers tied Bob Feller’s major league single-game strikeout record of 18 in a 5-2 win over the San Francisco Giants at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. (More info.)

1972 — Gymnast Olga Korbut of the Soviet Union won two gold and one silver medal in individual competition at the Summer Olympics in Munich, Germany. (More info.)
