1921 — At Forbes Field in Pittsburgh, the Pirates defeated the Philadelphia Phillies, 8-5, in the first Major League Baseball game broadcast on radio (KDKA in Pittsburgh). (More info.)

1967 — In an exhibition game in Denver, the Denver Broncos became the first AFL team to beat an NFL team when they defeated the Detroit Lions, 13-7. (More info.)

1973 — Knuckleballer Phil Niekro of the Atlanta Braves no-hit the San Diego Padres, 9-0, at Atlanta Fulton County Stadium. (More info.)

1980 — Doug Flynn of the New York Mets tied a major league record by hitting three triples in one game against the Expos in Montreal. (More info.)

1984 — American Joan Benoit won the first women’s Olympic marathon, finishing in 2 hours 24 minutes 52 seconds. (More info.)

1985 — Major League Baseball players elected to hold a two-day strike. (More info.)

1986 — Steve Carlton, then of the San Francisco Giants, became the second pitcher in history to record 4,000 strikeouts at Candlestick Park in San Francisco. (More info.)

1991 — Sergei Bubka of the Soviet Union became the first pole vaulter to clear 20 feet, vaulting 20 feet 1/4 inch in the Dag Galan Grand Prix in Malmo, Sweden. (More info.)
