1959 — Ernie Banks of the Chicago Cubs, who hit .304 with 45 home runs and 143 runs batted in during the season, was elected the Most Valuable Player of the National League for the second straight year. (More info.)

1980 – Japanese home run king Sadaharu Oh, who hit 868 career home runs, retired at age 40. (More info.)

1994 — Scottie Pippen scored 22 points, and the Bulls beat the Charlotte Hornets, 89-83, in their first game at the United Center in Chicago. (More info.)

1996 — Shortstop Derek Jeter of the New York Yankees was unanimously elected the American League Rookie of the Year. (More info.)

2001 — Luis Gonzalez of the Diamondbacks singled in the winning run off Mariano Rivera of the Yankees, and Arizona completed a two-run rally to beat New York 3-2 in Game 7 and win the World Series. (More info.)
