Texas Tech junior shortstop Kelby Tomlinson has been named the Phillips 66 Big 12 Baseball Newcomer of the Week, the league office announced Monday. This is the first season the league has awarded the top newcomer of the league on a weekly basis.

Joining Tomlinson as top performers in the Big 12 during the first week of the regular season were Oklahoma third baseman Garrett Buechele (Player of the Week) and Texas right-handed pitcher Taylor Jungmann (Pitcher of the Week).

Tomlinson led Texas Tech to a 4-0 record last week at the Red Raider Classic. He was named the Most Outstanding Player of the three-day classic while batting .583 (7-for-12) with three runs, five walks, five stolen bases and six RBI.

Tomlinson recorded two multi-hit games, including a 4-for-5 performance against Northwestern on Sunday. He also tallied three walks and scored a run on Opening Day against Western Michigan, went 2-for-3 with a run scored and two RBI against Northwestern on Saturday and went 1-for-3 against Utah Valley in the nightcap on Saturday.

Tomlinson (Elgin, Okla.) transferred to Texas Tech after playing two seasons at Seward County Community College.

Texas Tech will host the Brooks Wallace Memorial Classic starting on Thursday hosting BYU at 5pm.
