Governor Abbott was waiting to board a plane in New York when a 32-year-old approached him, shook his hand and told him to "go to hell."

According to the story from News West 9, the unidentified man first shook the governor's hand before loudly telling him to "go to hell."

Abbott's spokesman Matt Hirsch said Texas state troopers traveling with Abbott told the man to step away. As he left, he told the governor, "I'm going to see you on the plane."

The man was subsequently banned from taking the flight.

Abbott was traveling with his wife and daughter and meeting with corporate leaders in an effort to lure jobs to Texas. He has been a staunch critic of the Supreme Court's recent decision to legalize gay marriage in the US.

The unidentified man was not arrested or cited for his comments.
