U.S. Olympian Jason Young Finishes 18th in Qualifying Round of Discus Throw

Former Red Raider and U.S. Olympian Jason Young’s Olympic journey came to an end Monday morning as Young finished 18^th in the qualifying round of the men’s discus throw.

Competing for the United States, Young finished the opening round with a top mark of 62.18-meters (204'-0"). He recorded the mark on his first throw before fouling out on the final two attempts.

The opening throw was good enough to place Young eighth overall after the first flight of 20 throwers, however he couldn't maintain his spot in the top-12 who advance to Tuesday's final in London.

Young topped fellow U.S. throwers Lance Brooks (21^st – 61.17 – meters) and Jarred Rome (31^st 59.57 – meters).

"Jason finished higher than any American, and it’s such a tough field," Texas Tech head track and field coach Wes Kittley said. "He had to be at his best today to move on. I am sure he is a bit disappointed, but he had a great year."

Young became the first Red Raider to qualify for Team USA since Jonathan Johnson in 2004 after finishing third at the U.S. trials in June.
