UMC Reports Data Breach Potentially Compromised 18,000+ Patients’ Information

University Medical Center has confirmed that a data breach occurred, potentially compromising patient information.

In mid-May, UMC Physicians (UMCP) say that they discovered that an employee’s email was hacked, potentially compromising personal health information of more than 18,000 patients. The hack itself occurred on March 15, 2018.

Patient names, addresses, phone numbers, medical records, social security numbers, dates of birth, and health insurance information were all potentially compromised in the hack.

UMC and UMCP understand this incidence may create worry and inconvenience for patients, and the health system sincerely apologizes and regrets that this incidence has occurred.

UMCP has started an investigation to discover the source and impact of the hack, and has also reported the hack to authorities. The hospital is notifying patients who may be affected by the data breach and offering one free year of credit monitoring and identity restoration services.

The hospital said it has "no evidence" that the hacked information has been misused.
