Whitharral falls to Lipan 52-49 in Class 1A State Semifinals
Lipan was led by Zully Martinez who scored 23 points and dished out five assists to defeat Witharral 52-49 in the Class 1A Division II state semifinals in Austin. Witharral head coach Joshua Jourden said after the game that his team was “hosed” referring to the foul calls in the game against Taylor Moore.
Moore had 12 points and 13 rebounds for Whitharral (28-7), which rallied from 13-point deficit in the fourth quarter. Mia Ochoa scored on a layup with .5 seconds left to make the score 52-49 after a furious comeback where Lipan (34-3) led by as much as 13 points without Moore in the game.
Lipan ran out the clock after the layup by Ochoa. Shauna Coleman chipped in 11 points for Lipan, which lost in the 2011 semifinals by 39 points to eventual state champion Neches.
