Tuesday afternoon, former Republican presidential candidate Dr. Ben Carson, Congressman Jodey Arrington and numerous Texas Tech dignitaries attended a ceremony to present a newly created scholarship to a Texas Tech student.

The Braden Joplin Scholarship honors the life of Braden Joplin, who was killed last year in Iowa while campaigning for Dr. Ben Carson. The inaugural Joplin Scholarship was presented to Emily Jenkins.

Texas Tech University System Chancellor Robert L. Duncan, Texas Tech President Lawrence Schovanec and Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center President Dr. Tedd L. Mitchell were in attendance for the presentation.

Earlier this year, Dr. Carson was named the 17th Secretary of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development by President Donald J. Trump.
