Texas Rangers Fall to New York Yankees 5-2

In what was a rain soaked game in New York City the Texas Rangers dropped the second of a three game series against the Yankees today by a final of five to two.

The Rangers Derek Holland picked up his first loss of the season going seven and two-thirds innings, giving up eight hits and all five of the Yankees earned runs while striking out five and walking two.

New York jumped on Holland early as first-baseman and former Ranger Mark Teixeira hit a one on one out homer to right field in the bottom of the first.  Teixeira followed that at-bat with another RBI as he hit a sacrifice fly to Center in the bottom of the third inning that allowed teammate Derek Jeter to cross the plate making the game three nothing in New York’s favor.

Texas made an attempt to come back in the top of the 8th as they played small ball with Elvis Andrus hitting a single that allowed Mitch Moreland to come home. Michael Young followed Andrus’s at bat with an infield single to third base in which Ian Kinsler scored making the game three to two. Adrian Beltre was next to the plate and almost gave the Rangers the lead hitting a fly ball deep down the right field line that just landed outside the foul pole, instead he grounded into a double play on the next pitch ending the inning.

The Yankees then put the game out of reach in the bottom of the 8th as second baseman Robinson Cano hit a two run shot of Derek Holland, making the game five to two where it would stay.

Freddy Garcia picked his first win of the season for the Yankees going six innings of two-hit ball while giving up zero runs.

New York and Texas will return to action on Sunday for the series finale with a 7:05 start time. That game can be seen on ESPN as its part of their Sunday night baseball coverage. The Yankees however may be with-out All-Star third baseman Alex Rodriguez who left today’s contest in the top of seventh inning with lower back and oblique stiffness.
